Playing The Movies is a joy - everything you need to know is on-screen, and tasks, such as hiring an actor for example, are done via the mouse, picking them up by the scruff of the neck and dropping them in the Create Actor' room of your studio facility.

If you're stuck what to do next, click on an actor, director, crew or staff member, and a Donnie Darko-style sparkly stream will show visually where to move them to trigger an action. The tycoon part of the game has you building stage-schools, casting offices and sets, planting trees and flowers as well as sorting out facilities such as greasy burger vans and post-production.

The Sims part enables you to make your actors better-looking by giving them liposuction or plastic surgery, sorting out their considerable mental problems and even creating your own unique lookee-likee actors using the StarMaker tool. Finally, the movie-maker element gives you the freedom to script, cast, shoot, edit and release your own mini-movies, even allowing you to record your own voices, then convert them to WMV files to share with other film buffs.

Essential to success is research - as the timeline progresses, you can look into new technology to give your studio a crucial advantage over competitors, such as the development of sound or the introduction of colour film.

The Movies also follows certain world events: for example, in you'll hear about a German bloke with a dodgy 'tash invading Poland, meaning a glut of war films. Even at this preview stage, The Movies is a polished product, with a friendly mouse-driven interface, fantastic British sense of humour and a real depth of gameplay.

There's lots of things we talked about that didn't make it to the game - we talked about different locations, having your movie lot in different places and having more of a town around the movie studio so that your star's entourage meant something. I'd say the endgame only implemented a quarter of what we talked about. My problem is a weird one. See, when I put a script in the production office, multiple things go a bit wrong. No chairs show up in the casting room, so I can't control who's lead and who's not. When I put both actors and directors in their respective rooms, they don't show up-just continue walking around--but it still apparently counts as the script is rehearsed. The extras show up automatically, but the movie says it needs no crew at all and none show up.

This leads to, when the movie is done, the crew reviews being terrible--because there was no crew at all.

Not to mention, when shooting the film, only the actor will act out their parts. The director is needed but just walks off once shooting starts, and the crew is nonexistent.

To run The Movies in a custom resolution open the Registry Editor by clicking the Start button Run and typing regedit in the run box.

After pressing OK the editor will load. A list of information will display on the right hand side of the editor after clicking on The Movies folder. Next, right click on GD: Screen Width and click modify. Enter the width you want for example and click OK. Then right click on GD: Screen Height on click modify. Next time you run the game it will start in your custom resolution. Note: The game must be ran before the information appears in the registry editor.
